Ordinarily, I think hypocrisy call outs are a lazy man’s cudgel. Calling someone out for cynically shifting positions based on self-service is enticing, if only to relieve the frustration it causes. But a five minute study of, say, Mitch McConnell’s political career will tell you that exposing a hypocrite does nothing to seize their power. It just doesn’t matter and we need to seek more constructive take downs.
But yesterday I stumbled upon such a chef-kiss example that, more than the scoop itself, illustrates one of the worst and wide reaching consequences of the Trump presidency: That anything anti-Trump is inherently good.
The #Resistance’s motivation to cling to ghouls like media figures Bill Kristol, David Frum, Max Boot, and Jeffrey Goldberg, bureaucrats James Clapper, Michael Hayden, John Brennen and James Comey and politicians like Jeff Flake, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and George Fucking Bush is revolting. And of course, there’s John McCain, liberals' embodiment of what a Good Republican looks like. Bad people are good because they don’t like Trump who is himself, bad.
Notable #Resistance figure and human thumb John Aravosis is on one right now, appalled at the lack of respect shown to McCain by Trump and his supporters.
Trump has long been slammed for his controvesial comments in 2015 saying McCain was a war hero because he was captured.
"He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured," then candidate Trump said.
To Aravosis, this is unforgivable and in light of McCain's death, most of his feed is dedicated to Trump's lack of decorum toward the Senator. Excpet in 2008, Aravosis had nearly the exact same criticisms of then candidate McCain. A now deleted blog post on his cleverly titled America Blog asked, "Honestly, besides being tortured, what did McCain do to excel in the military?"
Look, I don't give a shit about respecting John McCain. It's just remarkable what Trump has done to centrist liberals. Is it the grift? Aravosis pulls in $1,444 a month for his podcast from Patreon. It's no Chapo but it's not nothing. Is it the ascendant Left that makes these people want to cozy up to Republicans they would have never found tasteful before? Or is it just Trump, rude, obnoxious, callous, indignant that has broken the Extreme Center's brains to the point that all they wish to resist is not the politics most Republicans share or the consequences of billions of people affected by Republican orthodoxy, but Trump himself?
John McCain's corpse, welcome to the #Resistance.
